There's nothing better than video. Well... for me at least. While I can follow directions quite nicely when they're written down, I find that watching someone else go through the steps is so much better, because you actually see on YOUR screen, what they are seeing on theirs, and you get to watch over their shoulder and learn how to do things.
What is the point of all this? I've had an R4 3DS card for quite some time, and I have NOT updated the firmware since the Nintendo 3DS version 6.3.0 was released. It needed an extra step for me to be able to upgrade my R4, that required a flash of the actual chip on the R4 with the software provided by the people who make it. Needless to say, I was worried. I didn't want to ruin or break my R4 3DS, as god knows I am prone to messing things - even when they're dead simple to do :)
The video below helped walk me through the update of my R4 card. And I realize now, after watching it and actually doing the update myself, that I was worried for NO REASON at all. It's stupid easy.
If your 3DS has been updated, and your R4 needs an update too, then watch the video below for full instructions and get the firmware files for your specific card from the website in the video.
